Chinese PL-ASR/PL-10 high agility fifth generation short range infrared homing air-to-air missile is in the same class as American AIM-9X, British ASRAAM, South African A-Darter and German IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled).
The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) will integrate the PL-ASR/PL-10 WVRAAM with the J-10A/S/B, J-11A/B/BH, J-15 and J-20 fighter jets.
The PL-ASR/PL-10 Within Visual Range (WVR) AAM will have Lock On After Launch (LOAL), TVC vanes, tail controls all of which when coupled with the Helmet And Display Sight System will allow he fighter pilots over the shoulder shots.
PL-ASR/PL-10 WVRAAM offers 90° off-boresight angle to deal with the highly manoeuvrable targets. Earlier reports has suggested that development of the PL-10 AAM has started in 2005 and will be completed by 2010.
