Reasons why Japan and South Korea should purchase the F35 B short take off , stealth attack jet.
1. Gives parity for the Japanese and Koreans to the Stealth Aircraft being developed by China.
2. In the air defense role the thrust vectoring of the F 35 B should prove the F35 B to be a manueverable dog fighter.
3. In the event airbases are damaged , the F35 B can operate from fields or highways.
4. If the Japanese or Korean navies need to operate beyond land based air cover. The F35 B can deploy from Helicopter Carrier Ships to provde Fleet Air Defense.

Some in the US. are advocating for the canceling of the F35 program and the F35 B in particular. What a sorry day for the US. Military if the F35 is cancelled while the Chinese and Russians move ahead with their own stealth aircraft programs. Will the US. really settle for the decades old F16, F15 and F18 for air superiority ?

If the US is desperate to save money then let the Air Force cut 100 of their F35's and replace them with the less expensive F15 Silent Eagle. Let the US Navy cut two aircraft carriers when their retirement is due and thus not buy the F35 C that would be needed for those two carriers. Leave the Marines alone and let them have their F35 B jets. The Marines are historically known for getting by with the bare minimum and their air wing has proven it's worth time and time again. Not to mention that having the F35 B deployed aboard the Assault Carrier Ships gives the Navy several extra aircraft carriers to deploy. Without the F35 B these are just passenger ships.

Just to point some things out, because some in these comments don't seem to get it.

First, the US already has the F-22 raptor, which is enough to meet the US's demands. The F-35 is a joke that the army will be reluctant to buy. They're purchase it, but only a few hundred and not the thousands they they were hoping, to replace their entire fleet.

Japan and South Korea already have their own stealth fighter programs, they don't need these fighters. Also, Japan and SK don't have carriers, thus they don't need a VTOL, nor a STOVL feature in their fighters.

Let's not forget that the F-35 has been criticized by many known high profile people, including the designer of the F-16 and A-10. The F-35's arsenal is much smaller than most other fighters, it does not have super cruise that other 5th gens (including the J-31/F-60) have or will feature. It has massive drag problems and is still considered to be nothing more than a potato.
