Thailand's Navy will purchase three Chinese build diesel electric attack submarines at cost of 12 billion baht ($355 million) each. The Thailand's Naval procurement committee voted in favor of purchasing three Chinese submarines.

Bangkok Post has reported a Thai offical saying,“China won the bid as it offered submarines equipped with superior weaponry and technology and the ability to stay longer underwater".

German submarine builder, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) was offering its Type 209/1400mod as well as smaller Type 210mod to Royal Thai Navy's (RTN's). Other competitors included Russian Kilo-class Project 636 submarine and South Korean Chang Bogo-class (Based on Type 209 submarine).

China has already secured a huge order of providing Pakistan Navy with eight submarines earlier this year. These submarines are equipped with air independent propulsion, anti-ship missiles, Yu-4 (SAET-50) passive homing and Yu-3 (SET-65E) active/passive homing torpedoes.
