In order to keep the balance of power in Asia. Asian nations need to form military alliances. Also the US Military must back away from military politics where in the past they have wanted asian nations to rely on the American military for protection. The economy alone demands that asian allies protect themselves through military modernization and strong alliances. The US. should provide surplus military equipment to allies that need it. For example , ships and F16 jet fighters to the Philippines and Harrier jump jets for the Thailand navy aircraft carrier.

Agree that surplus ships and F16 jets should be provided to the Philippines. The Philippines covers too large and strategic an area to not have at least a few guided missile ships and a squadron of combat jets.

Japan , S. Korea and Austrailia need to buy the VSTOL F 35 B Stealth Fighter to operate from their Helicopter Assault Carriers. This is the only way to retain the balance of power in Asia in light of the Chinese Aircraft Carrier and Stealth Jet development. And yes . The US should provide Harriers to the Thailand Navy.

REALITY: True the Philippines is of great strategic importance, but giving more combat ships and fighter jets to the philippines will be short lived. They dont have the means of maintaing them. The corrupt government officials will see to that. Funds to finance the purchase or maintenance of these weaponry will only go to their pockets!

It is not fair to say that the Philippines will not maintain donated ships when in fact the Philippines is still operating ships that date back to WW2 and the Korean war. The Americans should provide three Hamilton Class Cutters and then upgrade them with Sparrow missile RAM launchers , harpoon missiles and anti submarine torpedoes.

Not only the Americans should donate used military equipment to Asian allies. Japan and Korea should as well. S. Korea could provide more of the Fast attack Craft , a Corvette and a mini submarine to the Philippines Navy and ten F5 Freedom Fighter jets ( upgraded ) to the Philippine Airforce as well as surplus M48 Tanks to the Philippine Army.
Japan could provide a 'Training Submarine' to Thailand.
